Dr. King birthday celebration: interfaith service

We are excited and honored to host the Unity Group of Chattanooga‘s interfaith service celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as part of ML King Jr. Week in Chattanooga.

The interfaith service is Wednesday, Jan. 13, and will be in the sanctuary at the Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center, 1918 Union Ave. in Chattanooga. There will be a reception with vegan refreshments at 6 pm, followed by the service at 7 pm.

The service includes:

  • African drumming by Elston McLain, “Drumbeats for Christ.”
  • Welcome by Charlotte Williams of Eastdale Community Church and the Unity Group
  • Welcome by Beth Foster of Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center
  • Opening meditation by Jennifer Fahey of Tara Mandala Buddhist Sangha
  • Blowing the Shofar, “Listening, awakening the voice within,” by Rachel Salomon of B’nai Zion
  • Prayer for Unity by Bassam Issa of the Islamic Center
  • Call to Gather, “Six Directions Song,” by Berwyn and Patty Rooks of Lakota circle
  • “On Thoreau and non-violent resistance,” by Kristi McKinley of Unitarian Universalist Church
  • Remembering, Names of Chattanoogans Killed by Violence, by Cathy Harrington of Third Way
  • “On the intersection of experience, social justice and peace,” Larry Ingle of Friends Meeting
  • “Prayer for Working Together,” Barbara Miller of Baha’i faith
  • Words of Affirmation by Tad Beaty of Humanists Assembly
  • Closing by Tom Kunesh of Unity Group

Monday · 3 pm
• Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Parade & March •
· starts at the intersection of North Moore Road, Brainerd Road and Club Drive –> lineup at 1:45 pm between Waffle House and Ridgeview Baptist Church, 6 North Moore Road.
· parade starts at 3 pm with a right turn to proceed on North Moore Road to Brainerd High School, ends in the parking lot near the football stadium. (1.3 miles / 25 minute walk)

Monday  · 5 pm · *MAIN EVENT*
• Martin Luther King Jr Birthday Concert with Phusion Dance Group •
Brainerd High School, 1020 North Moore Road

(NOTE: The Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center will be closed on Monday so that staff and volunteers can attend the Unity Group events celebration Dr. King’s birthday.)
