Holy Heretic Daily Devotional: July 4-Be Still

Our Lady

Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Director Beth Foster

“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature — trees, flowers, grass — grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence … We need silence to be able to touch souls.” —  Mother Teresa

For those of us living in the U.S., today is one of the noisiest days of the year as the Fourth of July fireworks will continue until late into the evening. There will be parades and marching bands, parties and music. It is a day of celebration. The contrast of a place of silence and peace, a place to connect with God or the soul, a place to grow delicate things — trees, moonlight, dreams — is even more real. And the need for both the noise and the silence is is more apparent.

Today’s Action: On this noisiest of days, carve out five or 10 minutes to be in silence.

Sharing: We’d love to hear about your experiences with silence contrasted with the noisiness of the day.
