A Paraphrase of Psalm 140 by Mercy Junction Pastor Brian Merritt
Deliver African Americans, O LORD, from evildoers; protect them from those who are violent, who plan evil things by our systems, arresting them continually. Their extrajudicial killings become common, while politicians’ lips utter the vilest racism. Selah
Guard them, O LORD, from the hands of corrupt institutions; protect them from the violent whose bullets are their downfall. Their oppressors have hidden traps for them, and have closed their iron doors upon them, on the road they have profiled and targeted them. Selah
We cry to the LORD, “You are their God; give ear, O LORD, to the voice of their pleading.” O LORD, our Lord, be a strong deliverer, you have exposed the shame in our silence. Do not grant, O LORD, the profit of the powerful; do not further their exploitation. Selah
Those who surround them lift up their heads; let the injury from their guns overwhelm them! Let burning Tasers fall from them! Let batons be flung into pits, no more to rise! Do not let an attacker be established in the land; let evil speedily hunt down the indifferent incarcerator!
I know that the LORD maintains the cause of the oppressed, and executes justice for those whose rights are ignored. Surely you want the righteous to give thanks because you are just; your presence will represent the people’s justice.
