Holy Heretics Daily Devotional: July 16-Be Still

Compiled by Holy Heretic Connie Foster

“Go to bed, everything will be easier after a good night’s rest.” — Johnie Green Bernard

My dad, Johnie Green Bernard always stayed calm in a crisis. “Calm down, getting all worked up and out of control is not going to help anybody or the situation.” I can’t even count the occasions that he told me, “this is in God’s hands, go to bed. Pray about this before going to sleep and everything will look different at daylight and after a good night’s rest.” Even today, after all these years I still hear this when troubles come and I often say this to my children and others, “Get some rest, let’s put this in God’s hands, and everything will look different at daylight.”

Today’s Action: Tonight as you prepare for bed, whatever is troubling you, whether it’s a major illness or a simple home repair, try leaving it with God — whatever you conceive of God to be — before you rest. Try a prayer and commit your problem to a higher power. See if you find that joy comes in the morning, or, if at least you feel better equipped to deal with your challenges after a good night’s rest.

Sharing: Do you find challenges and crises easier to confront after a good night’s rest? How do you fall asleep when your mind is stressed with worry? We’d love to hear from you on our Facebook page.
