Holy Heretic Daily Devotional: July 22-Be Still

“Peace, be still!” — Mark 4:39

Since the idea of “be still” is so foreign to me, I rambled around the internet for some ideas on these meditations. I lost track of one I read concerning the above verse, so I’m going to paraphrase what it said. No intent to plagiarize, just sloppy with my references.

The commentary I read said to notice the exclamation mark! In the story, the panicked disciples on the boat woke Jesus from a sound sleep in their fear of the fierce storm. This was no imploring statement from him but commanding authority – like when we yell at the kids “HUSH – BE QUIET!!!” He followed this with a stinging rebuke of his followers, “Why are you so timid? How is it that you have no faith?”

This shows me that, just as there is a time for gentleness, there is also a time for firmness – a time for a whisper, and a time to shout. Some days (most days) when I’m pulled in a dozen different directions by my own inertia vs. urgent daily needs vs. long-term important goals, I need the shouted “BE STILL!!!” I still struggle with it.

Today’s Action: Today when things get the most frantic, practice saying out loud, “Be still.” Shout it, if you need to hear it loudly. If someone else hears you and asks, be ready to give an answer (I Peter 3:15).

Sharing: Did you yell at yourself to “be still” today?
