Fellowship of Heretics Daily Devotional: September 2-Acceptance

Compiled by Mercy Junction Council Member Sadie Morgan

“Acceptance does not mean submission to a degrading situation. It means accepting the fact of a situation and then deciding what we will do about it.”–  One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, March 26, pg 86

Most of the time our confusion on issues are rooted in our definition of the words used – love, humility, acceptance. One sees this quite a bit in recovery rooms, where sometimes our quibbling over language becomes an excuse for inaction. The people who wrote the daily reflection book used by many in Al-Anon were no doubt well-acquainted with this “game” after long years of living with an active alcoholic. They were concise and explicit: “accepting the fact of a situation.” It’s surprising how difficult that can be in some situations – a marriage on the rocks, a wayward child, a deadly clinical diagnosis, a dwindling bank account, a fuel gauge sitting on empty.

“It is what it is.” – Another common saying. NOT what we WANT it to be, WISH it were, think it SHOULD be, or MIGHT have been, “if only,” and whether we think we DESERVE it or not.

It is what it is. You don’t have to like it. It is what it is.

The amazing thing, once a person is able to just admit “it is what it is,” there is often a very great sense of relief. The struggle inside ceases. The mind can rest itself.

Then we are prepared to ask the question, “What am I going to do about it?”

Today’s Action: Is there some situation in your life that has you in emotional knots inside? Can you let go of the magical “if only” thinking, and take it at face value? If you can, when you can, discuss it with someone you trust. Then you will be ready to deal with it.

Today’s Sharing: Do things in your life look any different without the “if only” lens? Please comment on our Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/HolyHereticZine
