HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL- Sept. 9, 2016-ACCEPTANCE
Compiled by Mercy Junction Council Member Sadie Morgan
“If you live for people’s acceptance, you will die from their rejection.”
— Lecrae (Christian rap artist)
Most discussions about Acceptance center on our own efforts to deal with situations in which we find ourselves. This certainly is important to a sane adaptation to our world. However, many of us struggle with inner desire to BE accepted by others. When this becomes a craving beyond normal bounds of desire to belong, it can become a real problem.
Perhaps the root of the problem is in a past of unwarranted criticism or apathy, and our behavior is learned as a way to somehow “earn” the attention our growing minds need. We can become the chameleon that changes to match our surroundings, or the appeaser who always seeks to ingratiate oneself, or maybe the wallflower who tries to hide on the wall, having been persuaded we are not worth the attention of others. There are many ways this unfulfilled desire can find expression. The one thing we lose in all the contortions, however, is our authentic selves.
In what then becomes the cruelest cut of all, the one who inordinately needs the approval and acceptance of others is the one who attracts the critical, the users, the abusers, and every sort who will eventually reject the needy one over and over again.
The only sure cure for this behavior pattern is to become the kind of person we ourselves want to be – the kind of person we respect, admire, enjoy. It takes soul-searching honesty, and a lot of trial-and-error practice, but it’s worth it.
Today’s Action: Have you ever felt an excessive need for approval? What were you willing to sacrifice of yourself to get it? How did that work out? Think of the people you most admire and write a list of the traits you value in them. Do you share the same traits? If not, make that your goal in the coming year, to become the kind of person YOU admire!
Today’s Sharing: We’d love to see your lists! Please comment on our Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/HolyHereticZine
