HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL- Sept. 11, 2016-ACCEPTANCE
Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Director Beth Foster
“Acceptance looks like a passive state, but in reality it brings something entirely new into this world. That peace, a subtle energy vibration, is consciousness.” — Eckhart Tolle
I do a lot of dog rescue. These animals are the surplus, the refuse, the disposable — whether coming to me from the streets or a kill shelter or a family who just doesn’t have the means to care for them — of a society where anything that is a bother, an inconvenience or “unwanted” can be tossed aside or even killed.
When the dogs come to me, often hungry and dehydrated, sick and unloved — often without having had a safe place to sleep for many days, and bone tired to the core of their being — they are scared. They are anxious.
Sometimes after going into the kennel, they pace for awhile. They may guard their food bowls. They may cry. And then that magical moment comes. They have their bellies full. They have had plenty to drink. We have rid their bodies of parasites. They are comfortable. And they go to that big bed in the corner.
They lie down tentatively at first. Then they stretch out their limbs. They relax. There is that beautiful deep exhalation — that sigh every rescuer waits to hear, and then their breathing becomes easy. And they sleep the sweetest sleep of any living creature, the sleep that comes when we accept that we are valuable, that we are loved, that we matter enough to be cared for, and that we are safe.
Today’s Action: Sometime today, or tonight before you fall asleep, lie down. Starting with your toes and working all the way up your body, consciously relax each part of yourself. As you do, meditate on the words, “I am valuable. I am loved. I matter. I am safe.”
