“The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it emotionally.” — Flannery O’Connor
The reality of life can be a bitter pill to swallow sometimes. The struggle to accept reality seems to be everywhere. Part of the reality of life is that it’s unpredictable. Nothing is permanent, everything changes; and of course, a lot of things can happen that will transform who you are and have an impact on your life. The problem is that we need to cultivate the ability to truly accept whatever comes and embrace it with positivity.
We need to develop the habit of looking at whatever happens through a positive mindset instead of a negative and defeatist one. The way we perceive the world is not only biased by our general outlook on life, our previous experiences but also our mood. Our emotions.
Emotions are felt through perspective. If you notice that you’re becoming overly negative, realize that it’s just a matter of perspective. This can often be a process, and is only truly learned by successfully shifting from one to the other through conscious choices. If you start feeling overwhelmed by the negative events in your life, focus solely on what’s good for a while, even if it’s in the past. Bathe in that positive feeling.
The best way to bathe in positivity to accept when life is difficulty is to find a solution instead of complaining. Complaining is nothing more than focusing on the negative and offers no relief. You have to let go of the idea that we have any control over any of this we are living. Finally, we must seek the beauty in ALL situations. In graduate school my professor Kyle Bass helped me truly understand the word revision. To revision is to “See again.” Re-vision. We have to see things through naive eyes unaltered by pain. We have fight bitterness. We have to fight anger. We have to fight jaded.
Try to see each moment with the whimsey of a child. It’s only life; and life is terminal disease. Nobody gets out of it alive. So, can we all agree to smile about it and enjoy the beauty of each moment.
Today’s Action: Try to see each moment with the whimsey of a child. It’s only life; and life is terminal disease. Nobody gets out of it alive. So, can we all agree to smile about it and enjoy the beauty of each moment. Smile. It helps you embrace living.
