Fellowship of Heretics Daily Devotional: September 13 -Acceptance

Our Lady

Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Pastor Brian Merritt

“For after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain.” — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It is clear that we are not in control of many things that surround our lives. Whether is the weather, or just other people’s opinions we are unable to directly change what is outside of our control. It is time for us to give up our lust for divinity. Whether that is having a savior complex or attempting to be the chess master of everyone’s fate we must accept that attempting to control people, places and things is a sickness we must avoid. Maybe when we have given up on control we can focus on the improvement and service that we deserve as humans on this planet.

Today’s Action: Spend time to pray Howard Thurman’s powerful prayer out loud:

Lord, open unto me

Open unto me — light for my darkness.
Open unto me — courage for my fear.
Open unto me — hope for my despair.
Open unto me — peace for my turmoil.
Open unto me — joy for my sorrow.
Open unto me — strength for my weakness.
Open unto me — wisdom for my confession.
Open unto me — forgiveness for my sins.
Open unto me — love for my hates.
Open unto me — thy Self for my self.

Lord, Lord, open unto me!
