HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL- Sept. 16, 2016-ACCEPTANCE
Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Council Member Sadie Morgan
“Acceptance of prevailing standards often means we have no standards of our own.” — Jean Toomer (African American poet and novelist)
Last week I offered the simplistic definition of “acceptance” as merely facing the facts of a situation, i.e. “it is what it is.” This honest appraisal is best followed by the question, “What am I going to do about it?” Instead, we often find people shrug off the challenge of their acceptance with the saying “That’s just how it is.” Even worse is when we say “That’s how it’s always been.” Comfortable complacency can be more difficult to overcome than outright evil.
There are real problems in the world and in our lives. To deny them is foolhardy. To hide from them is childish and irresponsible. While it may be true that it has “always been this way,” that doesn’t mean something can never be made better. It is definitely true that, even with our most sincere efforts, we cannot fix all the problems in the world, especially under our own individual resources – but that does not entitle us to shirk from whatever small thing we can do to make something better. As wise persons have remarked in the past, just because we may not live to finish a work, that does not exempt us from beginning. The ideal is to start a work and teach others how to carry on in your stead.
Instead of a passive acceptance that denies or evades our personal responsibilities, we need an acceptance that inspires us to action.
Today’s Action: What problem or issue most resonates with you and inspires you to want to take action? What can you do to help change it? If there is honestly nothing you can do to change it, how can you adapt to that reality? Write down your thoughts on this.
Today’s Sharing: We’d love to hear your thoughts on today’s action. Please comment on our Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/HolyHereticZine
