HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL- Sept. 17, 2016-ACCEPTANCE
Compiled by Holy Heretic Connie Foster
“My brothers and sisters, believers in our Glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to to the poor man ‘you stand there’ or ‘sit on the floor by my feet,’ have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” — James 2: 1-4.
In this scripture James gives us a scenario and tells us what’s wrong with this scenario. James says we are forbidden to hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ with partiality. Having faith in Christ and having partiality do not go together. The scenario James gives us is one man appears to be wealthy. The other man who comes in is a “poor man in filthy rags.” The rich man is given a warm welcome, a good place to sit. The poor man is told “sit over here, out of the way.” When you consider what Jesus did and taught, there is no justification for favoritism. It is not compatible with faith in Christ. This kind of favoritism comes from wrong or evil thoughts. Why should we dishonor someone, simply because of their financial status? The love of God is ignored when this kind of prejudice is practiced.
“He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.”– Proverbs 22:16
Today’s Action: Let’s be watchful for signs of prejudice and judgement in our life and cleanse our heart to show equal love to all people. Spend a few minutes writing about one way in which you pass judgment on people and why this type of judgment is incompatible with the way in which James instructs us to treat our sisters and brothers.
Today’s Sharing: We’d love to hear any experiences you have had that come to mind as you reflect on the scenario James describes. Please comment on our Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/HolyHereticZine
