HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL- Sept. 23, 2016-ACCEPTANCE
Compiled by Mercy Junction Council Member Sadie Mogan
“Acceptance doesn’t mean resignation. It means understanding that something is what it is and there’s got to be a way through it.” — Michael J. Fox (Canadian-American actor, author, producer, and activist)
Michael Fox, by his example, is one person I’m inclined to believe when he says “there’s got to be a way through it.” He has been very open and active in response to his early-onset Parkinson Disease, showing us that, in spite of some very serious problems, we always have options about how we will deal with the life we are given.
In the same vein, the words of John Lennon also run around in my head, from “Watching the Wheels” –
People asking questions lost in confusion,
Well I tell them there’s no problem,
Only solutions …
When I feel overwhelmed with the “not knowing what to do,” these words calm me. What I’ve learned over the year that gives even more peace is the truth that not all solutions depend on me. Sometimes I need to wait, and that’s never been easy for me.
It’s important for me to remember that waiting is not the same as resignation. It isn’t the depressing act of giving up –- rather, it’s the purest expression of one’s faith, in the trenches, where it counts.
Today’s Action: Find someone who has a problem similar to yours. Look at what they are doing besides impotent resignation. Are they trying to improve the situation? Are they trying to encourage others who share the problem? Are they getting out of themselves in some way to turn their particular adversity into an asset? Consider how you might do the same.
