Fellowship of Heretics Daily Devotional: October 9, 2016 — I was sick, and you cared for me

Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Director Beth Foster

“Everyone should have health insurance? I say everyone should have health care. I’m not selling insurance.” — Dennis Kucinich

Too often when we talk about how we can change/dismantle our systems to ensure that “radical harvest” is available to all our neighbors, we have been so indoctrinated in those systems — we are so much products of those systems — that we can’t think outside of the paradigms set within those systems and by those who control them. When we talk about providing “insurance” to give access to health care, that is exactly where we have allowed ourselves to be trapped. The systems and the paradigms in which they try to keep us commodify everything — food, housing, water, education, and, yes, even medical care.

What we must do is reject those paradigms, dismantle those systems and say some things cannot be reduced to commodities. Some things are the rights of all living beings.

Food is a human right.

Water is a human right.

Housing is a human right.

And, yes, medical care to stay healthy or to get treatment when ill — these are human rights.

Today’s Action: Today, thinking about the paradigms set by the systems, reflect on the options presented to us in the upcoming presidential election. Are you comfortable with our options? Are there choice you haven’t considered because your thinking is trapped in the thinking of the paradigms of the systems? Are there other areas where options might be available to you that you hadn’t considered because your thinking had been limited by such paradigms?

Today’s Sharing: We’d love to hear about your reflection on how your thinking might have been trapped within the paradigms set by oppressive systems. Share your stories on our Facebook page at facebook.com/holyhereticzine.
