Fellowship of Heretics Daily Devotional: October 31, 2016 — I was sick, and you cared for me

The Nine of Pentacles from The Gilded Tarot Royale by Ciro Marchetti

Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Administrative Assistant, Reiki Master, and Empath Kali Meister

The Nine of Pentacles is a card of sacrifice and discipline as a means to getting what you want. When this card is revealed in your reading you are in good hands. The Nine of Pentacles shows that unlike others, you have learned from your own mistakes and you are working on moving forward in your life.

When asking the tarot about issues of health this card has a message that thoughts are things, and those things are powerful. Negativity can bring about issues of bad health. The simplest breakdown of this aspect of the 9 of Pentacles is that mindset is important.

Immunities are an area where your thoughts and attitudes can have a particularly powerful influence. In studies, researchers have found that activation in brain areas associated with negative emotions led to a weaker immune responses. The Mayo Clinic reports a number of health benefits associated with optimism, including a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular problems, less depression, and an increased lifespan.

Denmark did a study in 2015 with 607 participants. The study showed that when moods were overall more positive were 58 percent more likely to live at least another five years. These participants exercised more, too. The scientists can’t say for sure if positivity led to exercise or if exercise improved mood, but the important message is the same either way: Positive thinking and regular physical activity are really important for life.

It is important that we daily effort to see the positive things and events around us. Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you keep your head in the sand and ignore life’s less pleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way. You think the best is going to happen, not the worst.

It is also important to share positivity with others by helping them. Studies have shown that helping others helps you, too. Volunteering to help others is a way to give as much as you get and get as much as you give.

Today’s Action: Use positive words. Push out thoughts and feelings that put you in a negative place. Use words that evoke strength and success.
