Fellowship of Heretics Daily Devotional: November 10, 2016 — I was in Prison and You Visited Me

Compiled by Mercy Junction Council Member Maddie Nix

“The best thing — in Shadow’s opinion, perhaps the only good thing — about being in prison was a feeling of relief. The feeling that he had plunged as low as he could plunge and he’d hit the bottom. He didn’t worry that the man was going to get him, because the man had got him. He was no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, because yesterday had brought it.” — Neil Gaiman, “American Gods”

My hair, my hair
My eyes, my smile,
My jaw, my voice
My breast, my hips
My butt.

Living in a world I see gender,
you see sex.
I see me,
you see her.

Well look around at the things I see,
I see people messing up my pronouns EVERY SINGLE DAY
I see people calling me Jillian , which to me is just three
that have been following me since the day I was born.

But hey! I’m still here,
I’m still stuck
in this dysphoric body.

One day to come out of the closet again.
Well that day happens to be today,
I’m something you’d call transgender.
Born in one world living in another,
Living my life as ME.

November 20th is National Day of Remembrance for all of the transgender people who have been murdered. In the first 10 months of 2016, 23 transgender people were killed, making it the deadliest year on record for trans people. Almost all of the victims where people of color and the vast majority of those were black transgender individuals.
