HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL-Dec. 21, 2016-THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR THEM IN THE INN

Compiled by Holy Heretic Benjamin Foster

“The inn was full. There are many of you who think: “If only I had been there! How quick I would have been to help the baby!” Childish and silly thoughts are these! Why don’t you do it now? You have Christ in your neighbor. You ought to serve him, for what you do to your neighbor in need you do to the Lord Christ himself.” — Martin Luther

Those iconic words, “there was no room for them in the inn,” will be everywhere from the Pastor’s lips to the present’s wrapping paper this weekend. But how do these words and the very beginning of Jesus’ life on Earth affect us today on our spiritual path? It’s my belief that the exclusion of the holy family from the inn that evening in Bethlehem was meant to be lesson for us in being followers of God.

As Martin Luther said in the quote above, how many of us have said that we would have made room for Joseph and a very pregnant Mary that evening; an unregistered, unwed, foreign couple, bearing a child out of wedlock? Many claiming to be close to God do not make room for these very same types of people today? How are the circumstances expected to change if they were to find ourselves in the role of the Bethlehem inn keeper?

This Christmas season and on into 2017, look for Christ in everyone you meet. Whether that means that they further your relationship with God or that you can provide them room when the inn would not, I believe it is a duty of ours as Christians to take in and provide for the struggling as best we can. We are innkeepers every day to a lost, tired, and oppressed people. Do we do all we can to make sure our doors are open to them?

Today’s Action: Search your heart, pray, and talk with God to determine just what you can do to ease someone’s suffering this holiday season.

Today’s Sharing: Share an experience of a time when someone showed you compassion and mercy when they didn’t have to and how it further developed your relationship with God. Share them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/holyhereticzine
