“The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules.” -Bansky

Probably the most well known, yet still anonymous, graffiti artist in the world, Bansky has made a career from subversive epigrams, and darkly humorous, social satire. Ironically, Bansky’s work and reputation has achieved the unknown street artist a certain level of status and fame in, not only the graffiti world, but upscale art circles as well. Bansky has responded to this attention with further identity obscuring and an escalating of the artist’s messages of questioning conformity and authority, and speaking up loudly and in ways that cannot be dismissed against injustice and wrong doing.

Through paintings like the one above, and other popular works of the artist, Bansky has infiltrated the streets of the world, and the modern art scene, with blunt, sometimes oddly humorous, anti-tyrannical messages of social justice. Illegality has never been an issue for the artist and the term “The Bansky Effect” has been used to describe the plethora of “copycat” artists that have taken to the streets to set their own message down in spray paint and ink pens. Bansky’s art shows us that when the truth is subjugated and hidden, sometimes you have to put the message right back in their face.

Today’s Action: Allow yourself to give into the “Bansky Effect” and create your own subversive piece of art today. Whether you write, paint, play music, or make graffiti, make something today infused with the message that’s been laid on your heart.

Today’s Sharing: Be sure to share your subversive art with the community and with us at the Holy Heretic Facebook page at facebook.com/holyhereticzine.
