“We know the road to freedom has always been stalked by death.” –Angela Davis
Angela Davis has been a long time political and counterculture activist and ally to many social justice causes throughout her life. Davis came to prominence in the counterculture for her activism in the mid-sixties due to her becoming a leader of the Communist Party USA and having strong close relations to the Black Panther party. Her interests in prisoner rights led to her founding of Critical Resistance, an organization aimed at abolishing the Prison-Industrial complex. Proposing a focus on education and building engaged communities in hopes of rectifying many societal ills that led to many being imprisoned, Davis considers herself an abolitionist instead of a “prison reformer.”
In 1969, Davis would come to national attention when she was removed from her teaching position at the University of California, by request of Ronald Reagan, due to her stances on social justice issues and membership in the Communist Party. Throughout a multitude of struggles in the 70s and 80s, including being placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list on false charges, a 16-month incarceration, and a massive “Free Angela” campaign, Davis never stopped advocating for those living under oppression. Today, at 73 years old, Davis continues to push for social justice and prison reform and, before retiring, was a tenured professor at the University of California. In 2016, Davis was the recipient of a Doctor of Humane Letters in Healing and Social Justice from the school.
Today’s Action: Throughout Angela Davis’ life she has put her own liberty, freedom, and well being at risk by taking on many different people’s struggles as her own. Today, consider the sacrifices we can make to alleviate someone’s struggle or to further support movements aimed at providing the changes we wish to see in the world.
Today’s Sharing: Share the movements you support and the sacrifices you’ve made to further them with the community and with us at the Holy Heretic Facebook Page at facebook.com/holyhereticzine.
