HOLY HERETIC DEVOTIONAL – Feb. 12, 2017 – SHEROES & HEROES: ACTIVISTS
Compiled by Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center Assistant Director, Reiki Master, and Psychic Kali Meister
“If you’re a woman lying on the beach in the Maldives, you might want to know that a kilometer away, another woman is being flogged. And you might want to find your own way to protest that.” ~ Amal Clooney
Lebanese-British lawyer and activist Amal Ramzi Alamuddin Clooney was born in Beirut in February 1978. She was raised in England and studied at Oxford University and NYU before beginning her notable law career. She has also been a part of several United Nations commissions and tribunals.
In a triumphant win for the thousands of Yazidi women who have been enslaved by the Islamic State, Amal Clooney has confirmed that she will represent victims of the Yazidi genocide, including ISIS survivor and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Nadia Murad.
Clooney, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers specializing in international law and human rights law, will act as their counsel to achieve accountability for the genocide, sexual enslavement and trafficking of Yazidi girls and women by the Islamic State in Iraq. They plan to seek an International Criminal Court investigation and prosecution of the crimes committed against Nadia Murad and the Yazidi community.
